How To Opt Out Of The Career Ladder

— Jean Hsu

tl;dr: Jean explores the career ladder, particularly its alignment with definitions of success. “Working full-time? Strive to level up through promotions and checking off the leveling system’s boxes. Working as an IC? Climb the IC levels and then try to move into a leadership position.” Many individuals, especially those further in their careers, find the traditional ladder less appealing. Jean encourages readers to introspect on their values, understand the role they want work to play in their lives, and notice what genuinely sparks their interest. She shares personal experiences and emphasizes that the conventional career ladder doesn't have to dictate one's path.

Storage Challenges In The Evolution Of Database Architecture

— Sujay Venaik

tl;dr: “Sync service has been running since 2014, and we started facing issues related to physical storage on the database layer. For context, sync service runs on an AWS RDS Aurora cluster that has a single primary writer node and 3-4 readers, all of which are r6g.8xlarge. AWS RDS has a physical storage size limit of 128TiB for each RDS cluster… We were hovering around ~95TB, and our rate of ingestion was ~2TB per month. At this rate, we realized we would see ingestion issues in another 6-8 months.” The team devised a three-pronged strategy: eliminating unused tables, revising their append-only tables approach, and methodically freeing up space from sizable tables. This strategy successfully reclaimed about 60TB of space.

Is This A Date? Using ML To Identify Date Formats In File Names

tl;dr: “To make it easier for our users to organize and find their files, Dropbox has an automated feature called naming conventions. With this feature, users can set rules around how files should be named, and files uploaded to a specific folder will automatically be renamed to match the preferred convention. For example, files could be renamed to include a keyword or date… We developed a machine learning model that can accurately identify dates in a file name so that files can be renamed more effectively.”

How I Got Robbed Of My First Kernel Contribution

— Ariel Miculas

tl;dr: “I spent a lot of time and effort doing root cause analysis, fixing the bug, testing and validating the fix, getting feedback from other engineers at my company, adapting the fix to the latest kernel version, and sending two different patches to the maintainer… Instead of accepting my patch or guiding me towards a better solution, he went ahead and implemented his own fix, giving me credit only for reporting the issue.”
